The Beta Sigma Lambda Educational Foundation (BSL Educational Foundation, Inc.), a non-profit, tax-exempt organization with 501.c.3 status and a subsidiary of the Beta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated (www.Bslalphas.com) would like to invite you to participate in our 7TH ANNUAL STEP-OFF CLASSIC.

This event has three primary goals:

  1. To promote health and fitness among Greater Hartford families and youth,
  2. To encourage Greater Hartford youth to go to High School and College and
  3. To unite the community in a fun way.

This event will take place on Saturday, March 30th, 2024. Teams wishing to participate must confirm their intentions by completing the enclosed registration form no later than February 15th, 2024. We are anticipating responses from many teams. Therefore, you must respond as early as possible. There is a $150.00 non-refundable entry fee at the time of registration.

Step Show Contract

 Rules and Conditions:

  • Each Team commits to appear as one of the step teams scheduled to compete in the event on 3/30/2024. The show will start promptly at 1 p.m. in Belding Hall at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. (Doors will open at 12:15)
  • Each team agrees to compete for an award of $ 750.00.00 provided its performance complies with the rules herein and the team is chosen as the 1st place winner. Payment will be available immediately following the conclusion of the show. (After the announcement of the winning teams).
  • All teams must pay a non-refundable entry fee of $150.
  • THERE WILL BE A GRAND PRIZE OF $750.00.
  • ($500.00 FOR RUNNER-UPs).
  • All fees, contact sheets, and contracts are due no later than February 15th, 2024.
  • If a step team is unable or unwilling to perform in the Step Show, the Step Show Chairs must be notified by February 27th, 2024, so adequate time may be given to notify other aspiring teams and allow them to better prepare for the competition.
  • All teams must arrive for rehearsal time if they want to rehearse. Times for rehearsal will be selected by 3/16/24. Rehearsals are important if you have any lighting and sound cues so the Theater staff can program the lights and sound. The start time of the show is 1 pm SHARP!!! Teams must arrive back in the Theater by 11:45 a.m). The show will NOT be delayed!
  • Teams are to check in at the stage door of the theater, which is on the Trinity Street side of the building. Teams will be checked in and assigned a dressing room. Any team who wants stage practice time must check in 30 minutes before their assigned practice time. If a team is not able to make their assigned time and does not notify the HSOC, then they will forfeit their rehearsal time and may rehearse IF time permits. Rehearsal time is not guaranteed at this point.
  • Teams arriving late to the event will have 5 points deducted from their final score.
  • IDENTIFICATION WILL BE VERIFIED AT THE STAGE DOOR!!!!
  • The step team will provide all props.
  • Please make the HSOC aware of any large props beforehand, as you will be in a union theater, and they will need to know of any large pieces that are not hand props.
  • The order of the show will be determined after all teams have finished with their stage time.

Routine/Safety:

  • Step routines will be no longer than twelve (8) minutes.
  • 10 Points will be deducted after the 8-minute mark.
  • To avoid any misunderstanding or complications, individuals provided by your team who are familiar with your show should handle props, music, and lighting during the team’s performance. Music MUST be suitable for the show!!
  • Special lighting is permissible. Use of video services is available upon request. Strobe lights and video services must be requested with the submission of registration. Black lights are not available!
  • Performers cannot use oils, liquids, smoke bombs, pyrotechnics, or whipped cream. (THIS IS A FAMILY SHOW)
  • Profanity, nudity, obscene gestures, or unnecessary display of disrespect on or off the stage will result in a team’s disqualification. (If 7 9 judges deem an act or behavior inappropriate, it will be determined inappropriate). (THIS IS A FAMILY SHOW)
  • Any team member who is found to be displaying grossly unsportsmanlike conduct will result in the disqualification of their team.
  • Teams cannot display ANY signs of disrespect toward any other Greek Organization. Failure to comply will result in immediate disqualification from the competition!
  • Routines shall not consist of any amount of sexually explicit enactments or offensive language. (i.e. Men-Keep your shirts and clothes on!!!) If you have ..DON’T DO IT!!!
  • Any one person or team caught attempting to sneak alcohol, drugs, or other contraband into the show facility will be automatically disqualified and escorted off the premises.
  • Each team agrees that if you should violate this clause, you will be disqualified from the competition!!

Grading Scale:

  • The grading scale will be on a numeric scale using whole numbers from 1-10 or 1-15, with a score of one (1) being the lowest and ten (10) being the highest, with some categories using fifteen (15) as the highest.
  • Each group is allotted 10 minutes for their entire The time will begin on the initial musical or verbal presentation of the Step Team, NOT the introduction of the Step Team by the Host.
  • The timing procedure will be as follows:
  1. There will be a timer visible directly in front of the stage so teams can keep track of their time.
  2. At the initial (musical or verbal) presentation of the Step Team, 10:00 will be displayed on the timer and, therefore, begin to count down.
  3. If the timer has reached 0:00 and the team is still performing, 10 points will be deducted from the overall score for exceeding the time allowance.

THE WINNERS WILL BE PICKED BY A PANEL OF JUDGES GRADING ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: Categories/Points (minimum points possible 9; Maximum points possible: 105)

THE ABOVE RULES AND CONDITIONS ARE FINAL. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS!!

By signing below, as my team’s representative, I agree to all of the above rules, conditions, and regulations involved in participating in the 7th Annual Step-Off Classic at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. I also agree that I am the authorized person to sign on behalf of the team and ensure that each team member will adhere to all rules. I understand that failure to comply with the aforementioned can result in disqualification or point deduction, as determined by the step show chair, co-chair, and/or judges.
